The Turkey Pro Sez: "Attracting
songbirds to your property or area you hunt is a fun and rewarding hobby. Bluebirds are easy to attract for even novice "birders".
The Secret is the nesting box. This "Slab" Nest Box, when properly
located, will surpass other boxes in attracting and holding bluebirds because of its
natural, weathered look. The birds take to it much more
quickly.
You'll love the bluebirds'
beautiful blue coloring, gentle disposition and pleasing voice. There are three
species of bluebird: Eastern, Western, and Mountain. Belonging to the thrush family,
they have a bright blue color with a rusty red breast.
Due to destruction of its
habitat through land development, much of the traditional nesting sites for bluebirds,
including wooden fence posts and trees, with natural nesting cavities, have been
destroyed. Even though the bluebird population has greatly decreased, the future is
bright thanks to persons willing to invest a small amount of time and money in placing
suitable nesting site boxes.
Proper location of the
box is critical. Pastureland, acreages, and parks, away from human traffic, and
mowed areas are all good locations for bluebird boxes.
Avoid brushy and heavily wooded areas--this is the habitat of the House Wren. Make
certain there are perch sites near the nesting box, such as a fence line, wires, or tree
branches where bluebirds may perch to search for food.
The spring mating
rituals of the bluebird are quite enjoyable. The male selects a suitable nesting
cavity (your Slab Nest Box) and
devotes all his energy to luring a female to it with song. By fall the pair has
raised two or three broods of young. They may even stay there the entire winter if
suitable food is available, using the Slab Nest Box as a shelter.
Bluebirding is a great
wildlife, hands-on project that will be enjoyed by all members of your family.
Start with a "Slab" Nest Box for instant success."
