The Turkey Pro Sez: "Attracting
songbirds to your property or area you hunt is a fun and rewarding hobby. Wrens are easy to attract for even novice
"birders". The Secret is the nesting box. This
"Slab" Nest Box, when
properly located, will surpass other boxes in attracting and holding wrens because of its
natural, weathered look. The birds take to it much more
quickly.
The House Wren, also called the Common Wren, is common
throughout the U.S.A. It is a tiny little bird with a big voice and
uplifted tail. They are cinnamon brown above, buff or gray below, with fine
bars on their wings and tails. The Carolina Wren, common in southeastern states, and as far north as southern
New England, is reddish brown above, buff or gray below, and has a white line
above and behind the eye. The Bewick's Wren is found in the southwest and along the west
coast. It is darker, unpatterned with a longer tail, white belly, with a
white eyestripe. The Carolina and Bewick's Wren are usually year-round
residents, while the House Wren migrates in the winter.
Wrens are never without a
nesting site and will quickly set up housekeeping in a Slab Nest Box. They are friendly and
will live near humans. They prefer suburban yards, gardens, orchards or open
areas with trees and shrubs nearby for cover. The mating season is April
through July with two broods being raised per year.
Proper location of the box is
critical. Locate boxes 5' to 10' above ground in a tree or under building eaves.
Birding is a great
wildlife, hands-on project that will be enjoyed by all members of your family.
Start with a "Slab" Nest Box for instant success."
